At Wright Robinson, there is ample parking for blue badge holders. It is a very busy site with public access in the evenings for a number of sports clubs, so there is pressure on these spaces. Please talk to the club Welfare Officer if you are finding parking difficult.
The environment
We aim to maintain a calm and consistent environment for our swimmers, some of whom prefer a predictable training experience. Our coaches are trained and experienced in making adjustments to accommodate a wide range of physical and learning disabilities, and have a strong understanding of neurodiversity.
Changing facilities
We have changing facilities as follows:
– 1 accessible changing room – this has access from poolside and from the corridor outside. This means that both doors need to be locked from the inside when in use, and both unlocked afterwards. This changing room is only suitable for one swimmer at a time, accompanied by family/carer(s).
– Group female changing area – these doors are not locked to allow for access at any time. There are no private cubicles in this area.
– Group male changing area – these doors are not locked to allow for access at any time. There are no private cubicles in this area.
Access to the pool
The pool has a shallow end and a deep end, and can be accessed via steps with rails.
Wheelchair users can access the poolside and the changing areas without barriers.
Swimmers are supported to enter and leave the water safely. Our Head Coach is trained in assisting swimmers who need support when diving. We do not have diving blocks at this pool.
We also have a hoist and our coaches are trained to use this equipment.
Coaching
We use a range of buoyancy aids during training, and can adapt to suit the needs of swimmers.
We also use a whiteboard for instructions and can use flashcards to support communication.
Our coaches and staff have undertaken Deaf Awareness and Makaton training, and can adapt communication to the needs of swimmers.
Personalised accessibility plans
Some of our swimmers have very specific needs which need to be discussed and agreed prior to starting swimming with the club. This ensures that staff and supporting carers/families all understand what might trigger problems and how to address this effectively. The key to this is good communication from all parties, and we are proud to say that this has meant inclusion and positive experiences for all our swimmers.
Culture of the club
We are determined to make swimming accessible for everyone and our swimmers report that this works well for them. We’re always ready to learn about new ways to meet our swimmers’ needs so we’re very glad to hear what will help at any time. Our commitment to inclusion is central to all our decisions and planning.
